What’s surgery like for my pet?

Patients arriving for surgery must fast. Patients should have no food after 6 p.m. and no water after midnight the evening before the procedure. Before surgery, your pet’s blood will be tested to ensure there are no issues that could cause anesthesia complications. If your pet is healthy enough for anesthesia, we will schedule the procedure. We book surgeries for the mornings and can arrange for early drop-offs.

During the procedure, we use monitoring equipment to monitor your pet’s vital signs and provide them with intravenous fluids. Once the surgery is completed, we continue monitoring your pet until the anesthesia wears off. For some surgeries, we will keep the patient in the hospital overnight. The veterinarian will provide instructions on caring for your pet during recovery and prescribe pain medication. We have a variety of treatments available to manage your pet’s pain before and after surgery or in the event of trauma.
